IMI has been creating a niche for itself by engaging clients in high-growth, technologically complex product lines, such as those in the automotive, industrial and medical industries. Its facilities are currently producing hard disk drives, Blu-Ray disk drives, LCDs, power electronics, and automotive cameras, among others. IMI’s design and engineering group emphasizes its core competencies in short-range wireless technologies and embedded systems. The division’s short-range wireless products are applied in access points, routers, wireless sensor networks, imaging products, multimedia streaming and infotainment devices. Its embedded systems are used in multimedia streaming, imaging and camera applications, industrial controls and automation, and automotive tracking and control. IMI has engineering and design centers in the Philippines, Singapore, China, the US and Japan.

On the manufacturing side, the company’s flexibility is manifested in its capability to serve both low volume-high mix and high volume-low mix orders. IMI has 13 plants in operation worldwide, including six plants in the Philippines, five plants in China, one plant in Singapore, and a prototyping and new product introduction (NPI) facility in the US. The total production area exceeds 2 million square feet. The facilities comply with ISO 9001:2000 and ISO 14001:2004. A number of plants also comply with OHSAAS 18001:1999 and ISO/TS 16949:2002. They also conduct RoHS-compliant production as per customer requirement. The company is considering setting up facilities and engineering centers in areas such as Eastern Europe, Japan and Vietnam.

The company forecasts business growth to come from its existing customer base as well as from new clients. IMI’s customer base is broken down into: Japan (48 percent of current IMI business), the US (21 percent), Europe (18 percent) and the rest of Asia (13 percent). IMI’s business outlook is quite bullish. In the 2002 to 2007 period, the company’s compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 39 percent outpaced that of the global EMS industry, which was 13.5 percent. By 2011, the company aims to reach the $1 billion mark.
